Sports and Leisure of the Elizabethan era
The Elizabethan Era was a time known as the “Golden Age” in England. At this time Queen Elizabeth the first ruled as the Queen of England.This period lasted from 1558 to 1603. Arts flourished at this time,such as poetry, music,plays and also sports . In the Elizabethan era there were many sports that were used as entertainment.There were many things to entertainment during this era. Some things were feasts, banquets, fairs, plays(mystery), festivals, dancing, jousts/tournaments, games, sports(animal), hunting, and hawking(Sports and Leisure by Elizabethan-era,org). They had a variety of sports to play from such as .Sports was a competition allowing all social classes to interact with each other. The tournaments were an event enjoyed by everyone from Royals to peasants; it would usually be sponsored by a "rich member of the English aristocracy''( Elizabethan-era.org,'' Sports and Leisure''). one sport that was very popular was fencing. Fencing was a sport that was entertaining to watch during the Elizabethan Era. A knight used fencing as a fighting skill. It was said that, "Skill in using the two d and to fence effectively took time, practice and effort". According to the article “Elizabethan entertainment was popular whenever there was something to celebrate. A betrothal, wedding, victories, and festivals.” ( Elizabethan-era.org, ''Sports and Leisure''). These events and parties usually went into the night and included feast, banquets, and jousts. There also be music and dancing. Theses were enjoyed by the rich and royals. Poor people and peasants enjoyed different things. They enjoyed "entertainment from acting troupes, tournaments, dancing, trained animals, mummers(dancers), mystery plays, jugglers, and strolling players"(Elizabethan-era.org,''Sport and Leisure''). Overall, although the rich and poor took pleasure in different events and types of entertainment, in the Elizabethan Era sports and leisure were a big thing. |
